Wittenburg Germany—in the city where Martin Luther lived and studied, a Luther garden is forming. The idea is to have all the worldwide Lutheran congregations plant a tree in the garden, so that by the 500 year anniversary of the reformation (October, 2017) all would be represented there. Our outside-Latvia congregations board (LELBĀL) met in Wittenberg in September and planted a tree in this garden—a mountain ash. The Wittenberg mountain ash will also have sister trees planted in Rowfant, England and Washinton D.C. Our Seattle congregations board, together with the Seattle Latvian Centers board have responded to the invitation to also plant a tree on our property. Sunday, October 31st, after the Reformation Sunday service please join us in planting this reminder of our church’s origins – our tree will also be a mountain ash.
Reformation Sunday Service with Communion — 10:30 am
Followed by the planting of the Luther tree and coffee service.

Holy Rosary Cathedral
At the corner of Richards and Dunsmuir, Vancouver, Canada
Vancouver’s Phoenix Chamber Choir presents AMAZING GRACE, an evening of very special sacred music sung in the stunning acoustics of Holy Rosary Cathedral. The concert opens with a rare Canadian performance of the Latvian composer Ugis Praulins’ Missa Rigensis, an a cappella work written in the spirit of the great Renaissance masses and yet completely fresh, unique and riveting in its language. This mass was written for the great Riga Dom Boys’ Choir and premiered at Easter 2003 in the vast acoustic of Riga’s medieval cathedral.
Phoenix will then be joined by organist Roy Campbell and the Shaughnessy Heights United Church Choir for Fauré’s exquisitely intimate and serenely beautiful Requiem. A dazzling arrangement of Amazing Grace by the young headlining Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds rounds off a musical evening not to be missed.
Tickets available on-line: www.phoenixchamberchoir.bc.ca,
call 604-584-4755 or at the door.
Adults: $25/ Seniors & Students: $20
Groups of 10 or more purchased in advance: Only $15 each

Our own pastor Daira Cilnis is organizing and leading this event, so we hope to get lots of our congregation members to participate for at least one or two days – there will also be lectures and discussions in English. We will also be kicking off the celebration of our congregation’s founding 60 years ago with a salmon barbeque and picnic on Sunday, September 5th.
